Background of the Study
Urban youth in Nigeria frequently engage in code-switching—the practice of alternating between two or more languages within a conversation—which is a hallmark of Nigerian English in metropolitan areas. This phenomenon allows speakers to negotiate multiple identities and cultural affiliations while conveying nuanced pragmatic meanings. Code-switching can enrich communication by incorporating culturally specific idioms and pragmatic markers that enhance interpersonal nuance; however, it may also lead to ambiguity when interlocutors do not share equal familiarity with all the linguistic systems involved (Okoro, 2023). In informal settings such as social gatherings, social media interactions, and daily exchanges, urban youth use code-switching to express humor, sarcasm, emphasis, and politeness. Yet, the absence of standardized guidelines often results in varying interpretations of the intended message, challenging the effectiveness of communication (Balogun, 2024). This study investigates the impact of code-switching on pragmatic meanings in Nigerian English among urban youth by analyzing natural conversations and digital communications. The research aims to identify patterns in language alternation, examine how pragmatic cues are preserved or distorted, and explore the overall effect on message clarity in multilingual environments. By documenting these practices, the study will contribute to our understanding of bilingual communication in urban Nigeria and provide insights for educators and communication specialists working with multilingual populations.

Statement of the Problem
Despite its prevalence, code-switching among urban youth in Nigerian English is associated with inconsistent pragmatic outcomes. The lack of uniformity in switching practices may cause ambiguity, misinterpretation, or loss of cultural nuance, thereby affecting interpersonal communication (Okoro, 2023). While some researchers argue that code-switching enriches discourse, others point to potential breakdowns in clarity when pragmatic markers are altered or omitted. This inconsistency raises concerns about the overall impact on effective communication and cultural identity among youth. The current literature does not adequately address how code-switching influences pragmatic meaning, leaving a gap in understanding the balance between creative expression and communicative clarity (Balogun, 2024).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze patterns of code-switching in Nigerian English among urban youth.

  • To assess its impact on the pragmatic meanings conveyed during conversations.

  • To recommend strategies for minimizing ambiguities in multilingual interactions.

Research Questions

  • How do urban youth utilize code-switching in everyday conversations?

  • What are the pragmatic effects of code-switching on message clarity?

  • How can ambiguous outcomes be minimized in code-switched discourse?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the influence of code-switching on pragmatic meanings in Nigerian English among urban youth, offering insights into bilingual communication in contemporary urban settings. Its findings will assist educators, linguists, and communication specialists in developing strategies to enhance clarity and preserve cultural nuances in multilingual exchanges (Okoro, 2023; Balogun, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Nigerian English code-switching among urban youth and does not extend to other age groups or language combinations.

Definitions of Terms

  • Code-Switching: Alternating between languages within a single conversation.

  • Pragmatic Meanings: The implied and context-dependent meanings in language use.

  • Urban Youth: Young individuals living in metropolitan areas.
